Mahashivaratri is a Hindu festival that is celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the most important deities in the Hindu pantheon. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day (amavasya) in the Hindu month of Phalguna (February/March). This festival holds great significance for many Hindus, as it is seen as an opportunity to seek blessings from Lord Shiva and to connect with the divine.
On this day, many devotees of Lord Shiva observe fasts, perform puja (worship) and engage in other religious rituals to honor the god. They visit temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, where special puja and offerings are made. Some also visit holy shrines and places associated with Lord Shiva, such as the River Ganges and the Himalayas. Many people spend the entire night awake and praying, in commemoration of Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance of creation and destruction.
It is common for the devotees to perform the Rudra Abhishek, which is a ritualistic worship of Lord Shiva, where milk, honey, yogurt, ghee, and other offerings are poured over a shivalinga. It is also common for people to offer Bael leaves, fruits and flowers to Lord Shiva. It is also a common practice to light a lamp with sesame oil or ghee, keep it burning.
